Choosing a Hi-Vis Polo for Summer Site Work
Share
Cool, compliant and comfortable from smoko to knock-off — what to look for in a summer work polo.
When the mercury climbs, a hi-vis polo is what you live in. The right one keeps you cool, compliant and comfortable all day; the wrong one is a sweaty, scratchy distraction. Here’s what actually matters when you’re choosing one.
What Makes a Good Work Polo
Four things separate an all-day polo from a sweaty afternoon.
Breathability is everything in summer
The single biggest factor is fabric. Look for a lightweight, moisture-wicking polyester (often called microfibre or birdseye/mesh) that pulls sweat off your skin and dries fast. Heavy cotton feels nice for ten minutes, then holds sweat all day. Mesh side or back panels help dump heat when you’re working hard.
It still has to be compliant
A fluorescent polo covers day-use (Class D) visibility on most sites. If you work dawn, dusk or nights, you’ll need reflective tape — either a taped polo or a tape garment layered over the top. Our hi-vis standards guide in The Toolbox breaks down exactly which class you need.
Fit that works when you do
A work polo should move with you: roomy enough across the shoulders to reach overhead without it riding up, but not so loose it snags. Check the collar holds its shape (cheap ones curl after a few washes) and the body is long enough to stay tucked when you bend.
Colour, care and value
Pick your fluorescent colour to suit your site (yellow or orange), and note that navy or charcoal lower panels hide grime far better than all-bright designs. To keep them looking sharp, wash cool and inside out. The Coopers Elite hi-vis polo (C501) is built around all of this — breathable, hi-vis, and priced so you can keep a few in rotation for the week.

What fabric is best for a summer work polo?
A lightweight, moisture-wicking polyester (microfibre or birdseye/mesh). It pulls sweat off your skin and dries fast, unlike heavy cotton which holds moisture all day.
Are hi-vis polos compliant for site work?
A fluorescent polo can meet day-use (Class D) requirements. For dawn, dusk or night work you’ll need reflective tape as well — check your site induction.
How many work polos do I need?
Enough to rotate through the week so each one dries fully between wears — usually three to five. Affordable polos make that easy without breaking the bank.
How do I stop my hi-vis fading?
Wash cool and inside out, skip the fabric softener, and air dry out of direct sun. That keeps the fluorescent colour bright for far longer.
